  4.     In the wake of the gun-turret explosion on the U.S.S. Iowa that
  5. in April killed 47 sailors, the Naval Investigative Service
  6. considered a bizarre theory: that Navy petty officer Kendall Truitt
  7. may have set off the explosion to collect on a $100,000 insurance
  8. policy taken out by a sailor killed in the blast. The story was
  9. guaranteed a full airing when Pentagon sources privately confirmed
  10. the investigation to the press.

  12.     Truitt angrily denied the allegation, suggesting that the fault
  13. could lie with an inexperienced crew. Last week a Navy statement
  14. seemed to clear Truitt. Investigators are now focusing on the
  15. equally bizarre theory that Clayton Hartwig, the insured sailor,
  16. committed suicide by causing the explosion with a $15 timing
  17. device. The Navy blandly insisted that no apology was due Truitt
  18. because it had not "discussed publicly" the murder-suicide
  19. theories.
